We’ve been soiling our pants…

Apologies for the click bait

It’s safe to say that the title of this blog was deliberately designed to grab your attention, but now you’re here, we can tell you about some exciting soil health experiments we’re carrying out on the farm.

If you didn’t already know, on our own farm we practice regenerative agriculture which is all about improving soil health to protect the the future of our food systems, farming and the planet.

Our marketing team have been keen to find out more about the impact regenerative agriculture is having here at littleseed HQ so they decided to carry out their very own soil health tests.

#soilyourundies

After hearing about the soil your undies initiative at Groundswell last year, the littleseed marketing team were keen to try it out for ourselves.

The concept is that healthy soil contains a diverse range of bacteria, fungi and microorganisms that break down organic materials like cotton. The healthier the soil, the quicker that organic material breaks down. Cotton is an organic material so by burying it in the ground and digging it up after a couple of months we can gauge soil health by the level of decomposition in the cotton.

Enter a multipack of 100% cotton Y fronts and two enthusiastic marketeers.

Our plan is to bury pairs of pants 4 - 6 inches into the ground and then dig them up in around 2 months time. We are burying pants in different fields around the farm which are at different points in the crop rotation. When we dig them up we will compare them to see field has the best soil health and where there is room for improvement.

This is happening in real time and the pants have just been buried, but we will be back in a couple of months to share the results with you.
